Can I crimp a cable lug without a hydraulic crimping tool?

No. A 35mm2 cable lug requires a hydraulic or ratchet crimping tool with the correct die size to compress the barrel fully around all cable strands. Hand tools and pliers do not produce enough force to create a secure, low-resistance crimp on 35mm2 cable. An under-crimped lug can pull free from the cable under the high DC currents present in battery-to-inverter wiring and creates a fire risk at the terminal.

Do MC4 connectors from different brands mate with each other?

MC4 is a connector standard, not a single manufacturer's product. Connectors from different manufacturers that fully meet the MC4 specification will mate. However, some low-cost connectors use slightly different tolerances that can create an incomplete lock or a higher-resistance joint when mated with connectors from a different supplier.
