What does a WiFi dongle do for my inverter?

A WiFi dongle connects your inverter to the internet via your home or office WiFi network. Once connected, you can monitor real-time solar production, battery charge level, grid import and export, and daily energy totals from a smartphone app from anywhere. Most WiFi dongles also send fault alerts and allow remote parameter changes through the app. The Deye dongle uses the SolarmanPro app. The Luxpower dongle uses the LuxpowerTek portal. The SRNE module uses the SRNE cloud platform.

Does my Deye inverter come with a WiFi dongle included?

No. Deye hybrid inverters include a communication port but do not include a WiFi dongle in the box. The Deye WiFi Dongle is purchased separately and plugs into the inverter's RS485 or USB communication port. Check your inverter model's manual to confirm which communication port accepts the WiFi dongle.

What is a CT clamp and do I need one?

A CT clamp is a current transformer that clips around the live grid supply cable at your distribution board and measures the current flowing in and out of your property. The inverter uses this data to manage solar self-consumption, prevent grid export where not permitted, and optimise battery charging from solar versus grid. If your municipality does not permit solar export or if you want zero-export grid-tie operation, a CT clamp is required for both Deye and Luxpower hybrid inverters.

Can I use a Deye WiFi dongle on a Luxpower inverter?

No. WiFi dongles are brand-specific and communicate using proprietary protocols. The Deye WiFi Dongle only works with Deye inverters and the SolarmanPro platform. The Luxpower WiFi Dongle only works with Luxpower inverters and the LuxpowerTek portal. Using the wrong dongle on an incompatible inverter will not establish a connection.

Can I monitor my solar system remotely during Eskom outages?

Yes, as long as your WiFi router stays powered during the outage. Most hybrid inverter installations power the router from the inverter output so the WiFi network stays active during a grid outage. With the router running, the WiFi dongle continues to send data to the monitoring app and you can view system status in real time throughout the outage.
